Anti-Virus Warnings About Downloads
Every now and again we get reports that one or another anti-virus product is reporting a virus or spyware in downloads from our website:
- Jun 2006 - Comodo AV reporting an unspecified virus in the Jot+ Notes application file.
- Apr 2006 - Computer Associates AV reports "Win32/Unknown" in Jot+ Notes and myTasks application files, and is reportedly deleting these "infected" files!
- Feb 2006 - Norton AV reports "WinFixer" in Jot+ Notes downloads.
(Update 12 Feb: Symantec acknowledged their error and we believe it is fixed in current definitions) - Last year, McAfee AV reported the presence of "Generic Backdoor.dr". More information about this false positive is available from the McAfee website.
These are false alarms; King Stairs Software products are not infected with any virus or malware.
These false positives are due to bugs/errors in the anti-virus definitions, and are normally resolved in the next update to those definitions.
If your AV software has deleted the application files (eg JotPlus3.exe or mytasks.exe), then things get a bit complicated: If you try and restore the files, the AV software will just delete them again! If your AV software has an "on-access" scanner (which scans files when you open/launch them), disable that feature for a couple of days (by which time you should have downloaded corrected AV definitions); you can still manually scan files you download from the Internet.
You can restore deleted files by simply re-installing the application. Current versions are always available from the Files area.
