What
We Do
We aim to encourage interest in the history of Rotherhithe, Bermondsey,
the surrounding
area, Docklands and the River Thames.
How We Do It
| Arrange talks and lectures on appropriate topics | |
| Visit places of relevant interest | |
| Publish a semi-annual newsletter, the Redriffe Chronicle | |
| Exchange information with other local history groups | |
| Affiliation to LAMAS, the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society | |
| Encourage research into the history of the area | |
| Encourage the study of local history in schools | |
| Co-operate with bodies seeking to promote tourism in the area. |
Diary of Events
Below are the events which
have
been scheduled for the current season. Our meetings usually
take place
on the last Wednesday of the month and consist of
a talk by a respected authority on a local history subject. Doors open at 7:30pm, talks begin around 7:45pm, we
take a break for
refreshments halfway through, and the evenings end around 9:30pm -
10pm. Very occasionally the
schedule
needs to be altered, so remember to check this web-site regularly!
Non-members and guests are welcome at all our events and are asked to contribute a nominal £1.50 donation.

Remember that the Group is run entirely by volunteers with busy lives of their own. We regret that we are unable to assist with individual genealogical searches and suggest such enquiries be directed to the UK Family Records Centre or similar agencies - see links below.
Useful Links
Southwark Local History Library specialises in the history of the municipal borough in which Rotherhithe and Bermondsey are located. In addition to holding copies of most of the books ever published on the subject, the library has around 20,000 photographs and prints in its collections, together with an archive of local government records dating back to the 16th century. The UK Family Records Centre is the government archive of births, deaths, marriages, migration, military records and much more. As such, it is a superb resource for anyone wishing to discover more about their ancestry and family tree. View map
Genealogy-guide.org.uk is a useful guide for those wishing to learn more about their family history and provides useful advice for tracing family trees. The site is simple to use and provides step-by-step information on getting started and the sources that are available to help.
Despite its name, the East Surrey Family History Society includes Rotherhithe, Bermondsey and a swathe of South London within its coverage, and as such represents another useful resource for those wishing to trace long departed locals.
Charles
Booth's 1889 Descriptive Map of London Poverty
is a fascinating socio-historical document which not only shows
London's street
layout as it was in the late 19th century, but also colour-codes the
housing
according to the economic conditions of the inhabitants.
